The Waterlines

Naarden Vesting is the best preserved fortress town of the Netherlands and is part of the Dutch Waterlines Unesco World Heritage.

The Dutch Fortress Museum is located on the Turfpoort bastion. In the outside area an in the casemates of this 17th-century heritage site you will discover the story of Naarden Fortress in the history of the Netherlands.

Naarden-Vesting

Naarden-Vesting is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands and, as part of the Dutch Water Lines, has the status of Unesco World Heritage. The city is famous for its star shape derived from the six bastions and is unique in Europe for its double system of ramparts and moats. The Dutch Fortress Museum is located on the Turfpoort bastion. In the outdoor area and in the casemates of this 17th century heritage site, you will discover the story of Naarden-Vesting in the history of the Netherlands.

Sunday 11th of September: let the cannons roar!

During the open monuments day om September 11th the museum is open (and free) for everyone. On Sunday the cannons will  roar at 14 and 15 hours. Our captain will explain (in Dutch) and after that the cannonniers will work hard. All for the Netherlands and Orange!

May 21, 2022: Waterline Walking Tour 2022

The Dutch Fortress Museum will host the Waterline Walking Tour on 21 May 2022. The museum is closed for museum visits on this day.

Canon of The Netherlands

The Canon of The Netherlands takes you on a tour through the history of the Netherlands. Comprised of fifty segments, historical events, key figures and items are shown and the story of how the Netherlands came to be, is told.

The Canon forms the basis of the subject of history in primary and secondary education. A growing number of museums showcase their iconic masterpieces and are organizing special events around the Canon. The Dutch Fortress museum is part of the network of canon museums for the Napoleonic segment and King William I segment, three masterpieces are highlighted as part of these segments.
